About Fairystone State Park

Fairystone State Park, located in Patrick County, Virginia, encompasses over 4,400 acres of diverse Appalachian forest and mountainous terrain. The park is well known for its distinctive geologic feature, the Fairystone Rock, a large boulder believed to have originated from the Blue Ridge Mountains during the last Ice Age. The park's landscape includes dense hardwood forests, gentle streams, and the scenic Fairy Stone Lake, which provides a beautiful setting for various water-based activities. Established in 1936, the park has a rich history linked to early conservation efforts and recreational development during the Great Depression, including work by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore more than 20 miles of trails that range from easy walks to challenging hikes, including routes that lead to panoramic overlooks such as the Goat Rock. The park is favored for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping. Wildlife viewing is also excellent with frequent sightings of deer, wild turkey, and various bird species. Fairystone State Park appeals to families, casual visitors, and avid outdoor adventurers alike, offering both developed campgrounds and primitive sites, picnic areas, and boat rentals on Fairy Stone Lake. Seasonal events and educational programs enhance the visitor experience while fostering appreciation for the park’s natural and cultural resources.
